A record 28 per cent swing saw the Liberals lose the NSW state seat for the first time in 61 years, with local doctor Joe McGirr becoming Wagga’s independent representative.
MIA resident and SFF spokeswoman Helen Dalton said Dr McGirr campaigned strongly on the need to bolster Wagga hospital and health services.
“We know that when the NSW government loses a seat, they do everything they can to buy it back,” she said.

“The town of Orange has received hundreds of millions of dollars since the SFF won the seat in a by-election in 2016. They even moved a government department there.
“Wagga can expect lots of love over the next six months. They already have much better services than Griffith and Leeton, but we can expect the gap to widen.”
A state election for NSW will be held in March next year and the SFF are expected to again select Mrs Dalton as their candidate in the seat of Murray, which includes Leeton and Griffith.
SFF representative Robert Borsak said the MIA deserved more attention and funding from the government.
“Murray, a seat based around Griffith and Leeton, was narrowly held by the Nationals last year,” he said.
“Gladys visited that seat four times before the election, making a host of promises”.
“The Nationals won; and she hasn’t been back there since.”
A federal election is also expected next year.
