About 1pm, police attempted to stop a red 1983 Toyota Lexa on Rifle Range Road, however the driver refused to pull over, initiating a short pursuit.
The car crashed into an embankment on a dirt road off Rifle Range Road, and the driver and one passenger fled the vehicle and escaped.
Forensic police examined the unregistered vehicle and left the car there, notifying the last owner.
Police and the fire brigade were then called back to the scene at 7.45pm that afternoon because the car had been set alight.
Inspector Nick Seddon said if the car was burnt out to destroy any evidence, it was too late.
“We examined the vehicle before it was set alight, so we are underway in continuing investigations,” Inspector Seddon said.
