For some, school can be a drag. But this group of students from Wade High School are cutting away the tediousness of learning with a new hands-on program.
The mowing and servicing program is a functional skills program that allows students to learn practical skills in an alternative learning environment.
Not only the physical activity required of the actual mowing and the technical skills of repairing and services the equipment, the program includes a lot of business related skills like scheduling, invoicing, budgeting, communication and interpersonal skills.
Spear-heading the program is teacher William Sewell, who has already seen a difference in the enthusiasm the boys are presenting.
“There is a strong emphasis on community service in the program, giving our students the opportunity to give back to the Griffith community and develop an appreciation for paying it forward,” Mr Sewell said.
Already the team have mowed many lawns across Griffith, and with the money raised have been able to buy new mowers and edge trimmers.
The money will not only go towards this initiative, but future ventures and activities.
For student Matthew Knight-Doak, being able to do something he loves at school and give back to the community was a great combination.
“I love mowing lawns, and I find it really fun,” Matthew said.
“It’s really rewarding when you go out to peoples places and mow their lawns for them, especially when they can’t.”
“The majority of the clients we take are those who may not have the resources or ability to mow their lawn regularly and the boys have shown interest in helping where we can,” Mr Sewell said.
“It is also a great opportunity for the boys to develop positive relationships with people in the community.”
