Griffith Legacy Widows has banded together, donating $500 to Griffith Lions to lend a hand to drought-stricken farmers.
Legacy widows president Odette Dotter said the group wanted to donate because many members of the group have grown up or lived on farms and in farming communities.
“It’s so affecting the area, especially all the Riverina. It’s so dry around Cobar. A lot of the war widows have been farming families and they’ve come from farming families,” Mrs Dotter said.
“A lot of the ladies have enlisted from the Griffith area. We wanted something that wouldn’t be taken from admin.”

The money had been accumulated over time as part of the $2 donations members give each meeting, as well as a gathering held in Griffith last year.
“Last year we held a widows gathering here in Griffith. We ran raffles on the say. Ladies from Coleambally, Darlington Point, Cobar and Leeton also attended,” she said.
“Once a month, the members meet for lunch down at the Exies Club and we contribute two dollars attendance.”
Mrs Dotter said the group had been a great way for her to find kindred spirits.
“It is the community atmosphere and we’re all kindred spirits. All of our husbands have served. We have a lot of commonality. It’s that kindred support,” she said.
“That’s more important than anything else, there is that friendship that comes out.”
