Being named Business of the Year on Friday at the Murray-Riverina Regional Business Awards gala in Wagga was a “great honour”, according to Chairman Ross Anderson.
MCA also caught the Excellence in Business and Excellence in Innovation awards, contributing to the seven out of 12 categories won by Griffith-based businesses and entrepreneurs.
Joining MCA on the winners’ podium was Chaise Moat from Serafin Ag Pro who took out Outstanding Young Employee, Cassandra Smeeth from Bella Vita Tours coming out on top in the Outstanding Young Entrepreneur, and Flavourtech nabbing two awards for Excellence in Export and Outstanding Employer of Choice.
The outstandingly high number of wins from Griffith has impressed not only Griffith Business Chamber president Paul Pierotti, but NSW Business Chamber regional manager Andrew Cottrill as well.
From humble beginnings to now being listed on the Australian Stock Exchange, Mr Anderson attributes MCA’s success to technology, innovation and dedication.
“I think the judges recognised our export potential, and the fact our people have taken an existing native fish and used technology, innovation and the existing infrastructure of the Murrumbidgee Irrigation system to create a whole new industry with this luxury food product,” Mr Anderson said.
He said there were many deserving businesses at the regional awards, and he was proud to represent Griffith alongside other businesses showing the extremely strong entrepreneurial spirit of the area.

Mr Cottrill was pleased to see how much excellence was demonstrated by the businesses and entrepreneurs in the Griffith region, and said it was ‘unusual’ for one region to take out so many accolades.
“It probably demonstrates that the Griffith Business Chamber has done a great job in helping businesses with applications, as well as being a testimony to the high quality of businesses operating around Griffith,” Mr Cottrill said.
“I was delighted to see MCA pick up the three awards… [they have] successfully elevat[ed] this quality Murray-Riverina product to the culinary world stage.”
While the local business chamber recogsnised the high calibre of applicants at the Local Business Awards, Mr Pierotti said the regional award wins cemented their reputation.
“We all know our Riverina rivalry, and taking seven of the 12 categories facing off against Wagga and Albury is very satisfying,” Mr Pierotti said.
The regional winners will go on to compete for the state's top honour at the NSW State Business Awards on Friday November 23 at Luna Park in Sydney.
