In a time of 1:21.34 Danetrille claimed the main event by a length from Trevor Sutherland’s Hangin’ With Willy.
The race season hadn’t fared in Colvin’s favour as he was yet to train a win before running in the Griffith Cup and while having some confidence wasn’t sure how his horse would fare.
“He ran well in Wagga last week, and we were pretty keen on him,” he said.
“Though he might be a bit short, he is a bit of a mile horse, but the pace was right on.
“He dropped back a bit, but it was good to see him run home really strong.”
Colvin had a strong start to the day with another one of his horses, Look Behind, running second in the 1200m race one, Maiden Plate.
Of the local representation Cooee March, trained by Russell Hogan, finished in ninth, seven lengths behind while John Clark’s Smart Al finished in 10th, eight and a half lengths behind.
Hogan had a runner in race one as well in Lady Miner who finished in seventh.
Gino D’Altorio was well represented in the race proceedings on cup day with four runners.
Barcoo Bill was the pick of his runners when he finished in fourth in race four.
Meanwhile, his next best was Selinora who finished in fifth, two lengths behind first, in race six which saw first and second separated by the smallest of margins.
Dane Slugger, ninth in race two, and Rewarding Girl, sixth in race one, rounded out D’Altorio’s entrants.
