The day’s six race card attracted crowds of around 2000 people of all ages. This year saw races broadcast live on Sky One.
Griffith Jockey Club president Bernie Connolly said the races brought together a range of people for a lovely afternoon in the sun.
“There are a lot of people coming through the gate. There’s a big day of racing. All except one race have full fields,” Mr Connolly said.
“We have talent come from down south, from Mornington, Seymour and Cobar. We like to think our race meeting is gaining good status among race meets. This year, all our races are on Sky One.”
Griffith resident Daryl Henderson was just one punter hoping to run into a little luck on the day. An annual attendee, Mr Henderson said there are some specific things to look out for when trying to pick a winner.
“I’ve been to the Griffith Cup every year … I’ve had a few wins here and there … like to look at the jockey, especially when they come from the city to the country. I think they really come here with something.”
Before the big race, Mr Henderson told The Area News the jockey to watch was Blaike McDougall, who later took out the $20,000 Terra Ag Griffith Cup riding Danetrille.
“I’ve seen him doing a lot of riding in the metropolitan area, I’m looking toward him,” he said.

This year’s race meeting also saw Terra Ag services come on board as major sponsor for the first year.
Mr Connolly said the Griffith Cup’s continued success since reinvigorating the race is a continued source of pride.
“It’s been very satisfying ... Since we reformed eight or nine years ago it’s just been small steps. I think you only get to a higher level when you perform,” he said.
“We like to think we put on a good race meeting.”
Be sure to check back for more race coverage across the weekend.
