After reading a recent Area News article regarding the Griffith Base Hospital Auxiliary Board’s potential closure, Griffithite Jasmine John stepped forward to lend a hand.

Ms John said she doesn’t want groups and organisations like the Auxiliary (UHA), “that raise so much money for our community in various ways”, to disappear because of a lack of interest.
“I didn’t think it was fair,” Ms John said.
Coming from a family of volunteers, Ms John said she has seen the importance and impact of such work.

And, she plans to encourage other members of the community to put in their application too.
“It’s a good thing for the community, and it’s a good thing for yourself as well.”
Ms John has been nominated for the position of Secretary, which entails working on newsletters, coordinating with the head office, and so on.
“I was looking to help in any way that I can – that’s the position they felt would suit me, and I feel like I could do really well in that position.”
UHA President Bruna Ross said she is happy to see the community supporting the Auxiliary.
“We’re very happy people are taking an interest,” Ms Ross said.
She also encourages more young people to get behind the UHA.
“It’d be good for young people to come in.”
Ms John also believes the younger generation should put themselves out there for these organisations.
“Sometimes yes it can be a bit overwhelming, but one day you might need something from these people, or this organisation might be there for you, and it’s a great thing to give back.”
