Rain has again disrupted golf at Griffith Golf Club, with morning players staying away and only enough players for two grades in a single stroke.
Mitchell Howard, 72 nett, won 0-18 Grade after shooting 84 off the stick, ahead of Allan Murnane, 73 nett, 82 off the stick, on a countback over Brad Lemon.
Paul Connell, 67 net, won 19-36 Grade, nailing a birdie on the first for 92 off the stick, ahead of Steve Marland, 70 nett, also shooting 92.
Pro pins were won by Brett Polkinghorne and Shane Gaffey. Par Threes: 7th Mitch Howard, 11th Col Leeson, 16th Alan LeBroque. Vouchers to 75 nett.
A one-grade single stableford on Sunday was won by Gerry Cox, 35 points, from runner-up Brian Corner, 34 points. Andrew Romagnolo won the 7th pin; Alf Franchi 11th. Vouchers to 32 points.
The inaugural nine-hole competition got off to a flier with 19 players on Sunday. Nathan Lewin was best on 21 points from Peter Gill, 20. Brett Angel, Tiuru Phillip, 18 points, won vouchers. The nine-hole comp, designed for time-poor persons, will be held on Sundays. Entry fee is $12. Players in the 18 hole comp can enter by paying an extra $2.
Past members who have let their membership lapse can rejoin for $22 per month.
The semi-finals of the Mobil Match Play were also finalised last weekend. C.Leeson/G.Cox d J. Draskovic/J. Wiscombe 19th and will now play J. Magoci/A.Franchi in what will be a willing final, after they defeated D.Hillam/B.Browning 4/3.
Seniors are advised that the club pro will be holding a clinic for seniors each Tuesday from 2-3pm. Cost: $10.
Also next Tuesday, the pro will hold junior clinics for kids aged 5-9 from 9.30-10.30am and 10-15 years from 10.45-11.45am. Cost: $10. Contact the pro shop on 6962 3742.
The first round of the Area Builders Trophy will be played on Saturday, with the second round on the following Saturday, July 21. Today’s and Sunday’s events are single stablefords.
A reminder that Holden has pulled out of the Holden Scramble. A new sponsor has been found, with clubs allocated a scramble beginning in September.
The veterans played a single stableford last Thursday in three grades. It was also the fourth round of the Winter Cup. John F. Gale won 0-18 on 40 points from Roy Calabria, 38 points. Len Sexton, 36 points, won 19-24 ahead of Ken Alpen, 35 points. Mike Carnell, 37 points, won 25-36; Ray Mead, 36 points, was second. Roy Calabria won the 4th pin, Ray Mead 8th, Jim Dickie 15th. Vouchers to 33 points.
This week’s event is a single stableford and fifth round of the Winter Cup.
