Irrigators from Griffith, as well as those across the entire Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area (MIA), are welcome to attend this year’s Murray-Darling Association (MDA) annual conference, which will be hosted by neighbouring city Leeton.
To be held from August 29 to 31, the event will aim to showcase the MIA and its irrigators, with a particular focus on just how water efficient they are.
MDA region nine chairman Paul Maytom was pleased it was making a return to the region after 10 years.
“Obviously water and the Basin Plan has been a huge topic of discussion for many years now … during the conference we want to show what happens here and how well we do it,” Mr Maytom said.
“It’s a unique opportunity. Last year’s conference was in Renmark and the year before in Dubbo, so it’s about being able to put forward a different perspective on things,” he said.

About 300 people from across the basin are expected to attend the conference, with this year’s theme – Trust, Unity, Equity and Growth – coming at a time of renewed commitment to collaborative water management.
This time of unity follows 12 months of uncertainty in relation to sustainable diversion limits, allegations of water theft and the future of the Murray-Darling Basin Plan.
The conference will feature a variety of presenters, ranging NSW natural resource access regulator chief regulatory officer, Grant Barnes to representatives from some of Australia’s largest irrigation sectors, including Cotton Australia, the Ricegrowers’ Association of Australia and Webster Limited.
The Murray-Darling Basin Authority, the Commonwealth Environmental Water Holder and other statutory agencies will also be represented.
