At around 7pm, the 64-year-old man was walking home from the local pub when he crossed the level street crossing near the silos, about 400 meters away from Narrandera Street.
The east-bound train carrying wheat hit the man, who was killed by the impact.
A crime scene was established and was attended by detectives, State Rail representatives, local police volunteer rescue associations and council members.
Chief Inspector John Wadsworth said the incident appears to be an accident.
The train driver was taken to hospital for mandatory blood and urine testing.
