After weeks of mounting excitement, Kalinda school reached peak enthusiasm on Thursday morning as 101 Big Bash cars arrived for breakfast all decked out in weird, wacky and wonderful outfits and decorations.

Kalinda was chosen as a stop over point for Variety – The Children’s Charity five day Newcastle to Newcastle Big Bash, and started arriving at the school from 6.30am to 8.00am.

For Griffith East Public School student Kasey Denton, the morning was made that extra bit special with a visit from her Aunty Linda Friend from Sydney, who was participating in the Big Bash charity drive.
“It’s so exciting to see her here,” Kasey said.
“All the cars, the excitement, and the breakfast food are all amazing.”
Mrs Friend, who has taken part in the big bash for years, said the drive was an “addictive adventure” that was made even more special getting to visit Kasey in her home town.
“I’ve been involved for a long time through my husband who was a basher before I was, and we just love it!” Mrs Friend said.
“It’s the greatest cause, and it’s addictive – once you’ve done one you keep coming back. Visiting schools like this is definitely the highlight.”
Many students from Kalinda gathered at the gate to usher in the bashers to their school, handing each car a specially made magnet in an offering of welcome.
From Minions, Avengers and even Frozen themed vehicles, the children were absolutely ecstatic as they drove by, even when getting the occasional squirt from water pistols in the freezing nine-degree morning air.
Carmelina Irwin brought her children to see the cars, and joined with the Connors family to see all the cars make their way in.
“The kids are absolutely loving it, they can’t contain their excitement,” Ms Irvin said.
Kalinda Principal Angela Sampson was overjoyed at seeing all the cars and their occupants coming after weeks of preparation.
“There is such a buzz of excitement,” Mrs Sampson said.
Raising much-needed funds for their new sensory space for the students, and said the kids were so busy preparing everything the day before.
The money raised from this event will combine with $5400 already donated to the school to go towards purchases establishing their much-needed space.
The Variety Bash is an adventure with participants driving cars that are 30 years or older through regional parts of NSW, all in support of Variety – the Children’s Charity.
