Frank Signor and Peter Budd once again showed their support for the Riverina series and with each looking to try and crack a top 10 finish in their home town race.
The handicapper had the field split into 5 groups with Signor placed into group 4 with a 9:30 minute handicap. They were chasing the limit group that had a handicap of 16:00 minutes.
Budd was handicapped into group 2 with a very slender 1:30 minute start over a very strong scratch group containing two NRS riders in Jake Brooker and Myles Stewart along with Riverina powerhouse Peter Treloar.
Signor was putting in a very solid ride and managed to stay with his group over the ”piggery hill”. The wind was holding off making the race conditions ideal as Signors group powered to the u-turn point.
Budd’s chopping block group was caught 20km into the race and from there it was time to try and hang on to the strong scratch group.
At the half way u-turn the scratch riders could see they had made up significant ground on all the other groups and were in with a big chance to take the race win as long as the kept the pace going.
The scratch riders started to get help from all the chopping block riders with the big group rolling along at speeds of 44-50kph.
Signors group were still up the road but had been caught by a hard charging group 3. Signor got “shelled out the back” on the return trip over “piggery hill” and now had a 20km ride to the finish. He managed to sit with the scratch group for a good while getting him part way home.
At 57 years of age Budd was putting in a super ride alongside the youngsters in scratch. The scratch group had the leaders in their sights with 5km still to race but group 3 was not giving in. The race went right to the wire with scratch hitting the lead with 500 metres to the line.
Budd was in good position to get a result but the fast race and the effects of last Saturdays 225km Grafton to Inverell had taken its toll and Budd was running on empty. The win was taken by Peter Treloar of the Tolland Club from Myles Stewart and Brodie Pearce also of Tolland. Budd cruised across the line seconds later content to have ridden 40km with the flying scratch group.
Signor also cruised across the line a short time later very pleased with his ride. After a couple of years in the wilderness due to a motor scooter accident Signor has shown great improvement over the course of the 2018 Riverina Series with his form improving with each race.
