This is the first year that Griffith East Public School has taken part in the event.
At 11am this morning, participants got to hear the story Hickory Dickory Dash, written by Australian author Tony Wilson, and illustrated by Laura Wood.
Year one teacher, Jay Grandi, read the book out to eager students.
The yearly campaign, which sees a picture book written and illustrated by an Australian author and illustrator read across the entire nation, is supported by Scholastic, and the Library and Information Association of New Zealand Aotearoa (Lianza).

The event was held by Australian Library and Information Association, with the aim to promote the value of literacy and reading in children, and get one million children involved in the program.
Griffith East Public School librarian Denise Higgins said she was really pleased with the event.
Were trying to promote literature in schools, and Australian literature, she said.
Last years book was The Cow Tripped Over the Moon, also written by Tony Wilson, and illustrated by Laura Wood.
The Area News spoke to some participating students.
Brody Summers, a year five student said that he really liked how the book rhymed, and wants to hear another nursery rhyme book for next years Storytime event.
Abbey Harris, a year one student said her favourite part was when the cat stepped in dog poop.
I want to hear more funny books, she said.
And, Joseph Macri, another year five student most enjoyed the last few pages of the story, where the mice ran up the clock and the cat dashed inside after them, hitting the pendulum.
They all agreed on one thing: they would read the book again.
National Simultaneous Storytime 2018 was held on Wednesday May 23 at 11am AEST.
