The strength of Riverina League’s 85-point belting of Farrer League last Saturday at Robertson Oval is likely to spoil chances of a return bout next year.

While both leagues will conduct a review of this year’s representative campaigns, Farrer League president David Oehm conceded they were not as competitive as hoped.

“Obviously Riverina are a few notches ahead of us and we don’t deny that,” Oehm said.

“At this stage, it was a drubbing, a fair old hiding and highlighted the difference in the two competitions.

“It depends on what is in the offering from other leagues, we wouldn’t rule out playing the RFL again but we would be open to other ideas.”

While there was no formal agreement between the two leagues, both entered this year’s format open to a two-year deal with a return bout at Narrandera Sportsground in 2019.

With Riverina League president Chris Flanigan overseas, representative coach Guy Orton does not see a need for a second game anytime in the near future.

“If it was a closer game then I would go for a second time but I think with the way we moved the footy, we opened the game right up with our run and carry,” Orton said.

“The first five minutes was hot and if the whole game was like that, I would be happy to give it another go but I think it showed we are well above that so there is no real point to us going at it again.

“If it does happen, hopefully we win the game again to show them.”

Both leagues will now conduct individual reviews then sit down with AFL Southern NSW’s Paul Habel and AFL Riverina football operations manager Shane Buchanan to work out a plan going forward.

Aside from the results, Oehm enjoyed this year’s representative campaign.

He is open to ideas for future games but believes staying closer to home and keeping things cost-effective going forward is Farrer League’s number one priority, while bettering the league as much as possible.

Riverina won opens and under 17s games in both football and netball by big margins.
