Home grown: Griffith’s Ben Sekali through to the next round of The Voice

Griffith’s own Ben Sekali is well on his way to becoming a local household name, making it through to the live rounds on The Voice

Mr Sekali went up against youngest Voice contestant Leo Abisaab in what has been described as a stirring rendition of Sam Smith’s One Last Song.

”I didn’t expect I was going to get through at all. I was expecting the worst – but hoping for the best, of course.”

The powerhouse vocalist says he was “over the moon” when the judges told him he’d progressed to the next round.

“It’s been exciting actually – full on. It definitely kicks off the nerves, but it’s fun. I love being backstage and on the show. It’s such a great experience,” he said.

“I was actually shocked, but also relieved and grateful. I was just excited that I got through.”

Judges were blown away by his rendition of A Change is Gonna Comein the initial audition round, with Mr Sekali eventually being selected as part of Joe Jonas’ team.

While the learning curb has been steep, Mr Sekali says he’s focused on coming out of his shell a little more and playing the game.

“Right now, my focus is just trying to give it my all. I was kind of holding back before the shows. I’m still trying to get used to the environment and building up a mean confidence just to push it out,” he said.

The country boy discovered his passion for singing performing at his father’s church in Griffith, where he says he sang with his siblings and assisted with harmonies.

He’s been feeling the support from the community back home as well.

“I’ve felt the love. I’m really appreciative of that. I just want to to say thank-you Griffith for the support. It just helps me push further.”
