Round 2 of the Griffith Netball Association’s winter competition was held last Saturday in cold and windy conditions at Jubilee Oval. The contrast in weather conditions from Round 1 to Round 2 was stark, with the early morning Net-Set Goers rugged up to keep out the strong and cold wind.
The Shooting Stars take on the more experienced Benny Mahon Constructions and this experienced showed in the scoreline. However, with Shooting Stars being the 8/9 year old Team of the Week, and Matilda Seddon named their best player, it wasn’t all bad for the Shooting Stars this week.
In the 12/13’s division, the Xquisite Dolphins, 3C Stars and Gunn Accounting all registered good wins. Griffith Pet Resort Hot Shots bounced back from a loss last week in the 8/9’s division at this time with a good win over the Griffith East All Stars.
With conditions warming slightly by the 12 o’clock timeslot, the last round of 8/9’s took to the court. Keep It North made it two wins in a row, defeating first round winners Firebirds. The 10/11 years Team of the Week, The Ladybirds, couldn’t match it with the Area Refrigeration Bluebirds, despite an excellent defensive performance by the Ladybirds player of the game, Ella Gaske. LaPetite Lightning went down to the South Grove Angels despite scoring their first goals of the season in an improved performance and in The Athletes Foot D Grade, AES Rockets had their first win by defeating Stegglers.
The 1:10pm timeslot offered a mixture of grades. In D Grade, the JBS Thunderbirds took care of Caesars whilst in C Grade, The Force accounted for the Rep 12 girls. B Grade saw Casella Family Wines and the new look Deadlies take wins.
PFD Swifts won a close match over SPS/Doms/Bowmans by just 3 goals in a see-sawing contest in Ill Corso B Grade. A strong 2nd and 4th quarter from SPS/Doms/Bowmans nearly saw them steal the win, however the PDF girls did very well to remain calm and take the match. At the same time in D Grade, a similar battle between Viccari’s and Bardney Metal Fabrication was underway.
With scores locked at quarter time, Bardney’s skipped out to a small lead by half time, only to be overhauled by the undermanned Viccari’s. The result at the end of the game was a hard fought draw in an entertaining and very close contest.
In the Coro Club A Grade this week Tonann got a full team on the court and a win over Griffith Motor Group, while Pinnacle finished strongly to record a 6 goal win over Fresh Health and Fitness / Masters of Hair after both teams were locked at 9 a piece at half time. In other 3:30 matches, Here If You Need overcame the Goal Diggers whilst the Suncorp/Pinnacle game ended early due to an on court injury to a Suncorp player. We wish her all the best for a speedy recovery.
