The recently established F.A.W. in Griffith has only a tiny voice, it seems, but it has a message and they want to proclaim it loud.
The Griffith Riverina F.A.W. began just under two years ago when Marilyn ‘Maz’ Sayer realised there wasn’t a writers’ group in Griffith.
“I used to be in Mudgee and they had a writers’ group there, from the same mob [F.A.W.], and when I got here [Griffith] I looked for it, hunted it out, and was told there wasn’t one, said Ms Sayer.”
“I couldn’t believe there wasn’t a writers’ group from the F.A.W.”
“So, I wrote to the people and just said, is it all right if I open a branch here? And, they jumped at it.”
Ms Sayer, now President of the Griffith Riverina F.A.W. runs writing exercises, games, and shares creative writing to help others build confidence and instil discipline in their craft.
For each month’s meetup, the group set a writing task. The topic of May’s task is ‘deserted house’.
They are currently running a literary competition with categories for K-6 school students, 7-12 school students, and open (for all ages). Entries close 31 May 2018.
First prize is $70; second prize is $50; and third prize is $25.
They are now looking for more members to join in on the fun and frivolity, and to help their group grow.

Caroline Tuohey, children’s book author, bush poet, and performance poet, joined the Griffith Riverina F.A.W. as secretary.
Ms Tuohey started writing in 2011 and has published three children’s books: Climb, Forest Wonder, and Boof Goes to Beauty School.
“Boof Goes To Beauty School is a picture book for children aged up to eight. It celebrates dads, makeup, and the unexpected surprises life gives us,” Ms Tuohey said.
“It’s a book for dads and grandpas to read.”
“I know some burly blokes and ironically their wives are often the ones buying it. The mums say the dads are going to love it, and they do.”
Ms Tuohey’s children’s books have been very popular, with her latest book, Boof Goes to Beauty School so far receiving positive reviews from mums and dads.
Ms Tuohey also recently held a first major display for her book at the Mums and Bubs market in Griffith.
The Griffith Riverina F.A.W. runs meetings from 6.30pm – 8.30pm on the last Thursday of each month at the Multicultural building on Banna Avenue (between the courthouse and park).
They are currently considering changing the meeting time to more accommodate people interested.
