After a stellar display over the holidays Macedone family were presented with Griffith’s Festival of Lights Mayor’s Choice prize this week.
Angelo Macedone said the tradition started more than a decade ago and has grown over time.
“My grandkids love the lights so much they never wanted to go home,” he said.
“We got a lot of compliments saying ours was a little bit different … ours had a lot of different pieces to look at.”
He promised another round of spectacular lights this year.
“It’s fantastic to win. We’re very thankful. We didn’t expect to win, but it’s great.”
Griffith Mayor John Dal Broi presented Mr Macedone and his wife Claire with a $500 gift card and a special plaque.
Mr Macedone hopes the Festival of Lights competition encourages people to light up their own homes.
“It makes it look like Christmas. One house in 200 doesn’t show up as much, but when you’ve got 20 – 30 homes you get a lot of encouragement,” he said.
“It’s not easy, but if you spend a bit of time it can come together nicely.”
Cr Dal Broi says the judging the Festival is one of the highlights of his year as Mayor.
Last year’s Festival of Lights more than 40 homes register and over 600 people taking part of the tours.
Cr Dal Broi says the judging the Festival is one of the highlights of his year as Mayor.
“This is an award I really enjoy giving because it’s doing something for the community,” he said.
“People like Angelo and his family spend a lot of time putting up Christmas lights. I’d like to think it’s contagious, so that more people will put up lights to acknowledge Christmas.
