The town was described as “dripping with money and optimism,” and “groaning under the weight of it’s own success” in The Australian.
We hit the streets to hear what people thought of Griffith and it’s new commendation.
No place like home
One stand-out for The Australian was it’s “multicultural flavour,” and statistics were used to demonstrate the mix of nationalities in Griffith.
But it’s not just this combination of a wide variety of nationalities, its the acceptance and welcome people from other countries receive when they come here that makes them stay.
Sera Byrnes came to Griffith from Fiji, and says she wouldn’t want to be anywhere else.
“It’s a very multicultural town here, and there is such a welcoming spirit. The Harmony Day celebrations last week highlighted this,” Ms Byrnes said.
“I’ve been here with 25 years and have had three children born here, and I wouldn’t want to go anywhere else.”
“Griffith is a good place for all cultures, especially Islanders, being a country town it feels like home, and the people have a smile on their face and are very warm and welcoming.”
No taint from “dark past”
One of the points mentioned in The Australia Article mentioned Griffith’s inability to attack new workers to fill the growing employment opportunities could be explained by “still tainted by it’s dark past.”
Kay Butler is passing through from Cobar, and she says while our past is on display with the Donald MacKay memorial, she sees no “taint” on the town.
“I think memories are there, but there is definitely no taint on the town,” Mrs Butler said.
“What you immediately notice in Griffith is it’s friendliness and vibrant energy, a combination of history and future.”
She says everyone here is welcoming, and the service is exceptional.
“We had our caravan booked in, and they went above and beyond to accommodate us, it’s typical exceptional Griffith customer service.”
How Griffith compares
So what sets Griffith apart from other towns? For visiting Leeton resident Robyn Simpson it’s amenities, shopping and cleanliness.
“I love coming here to shop, I love the fact you have a heated pool, we went to a show at the Griffith Theater on the weekend, you can usually find a parking spot, and it’s very clean for a regional centre,” Ms Simpson said.
David from Wagga Wagga said the energy and vibrancy of Griffith set it worlds above other towns.
“I find the energy here is incredible, there is always a buzz, people walking, shopping, cars, so much activity. It emits energy,” he said.
“I’ve traveled to Bathurst and other places which all have their beauty, but Griffith has something a lot more special.”
And of course the age old question: what makes Griffith better than Wagga?
“Wagga is a place that’s busy, it has a lot more with work, but I still find this has a lot more energy, and the people are more forthcoming. People are happy to stop and talk, and in bigger cities they don’t.”
