Griffith businesswoman Tara-Rose Myers focuses her business on ethical and sustainable fashion and was featured last year as part of Eco Fashion Week in Perth.
A new craft workshop targeting children as part of the Easter celebrations at CWA Park on March 31 aims to drive home this same message.
“I’m trying to move towards zero waste in my business … as part of the activity the children will decorate a poster using scraps of material I have accumulated,” she said.
”Everything we use in the workshop will be reusable or recyclable. The paint brushes will be washed and used again, while the posters are printed on recycled paper.”
She says last year’s eco-fashion week in Perth inspired her to move into minimising her business’ waste output and even sent her in search of more sustainable clothing material.
“I flew out to Perth to attend Eco Fashion Week Australia and had a collection-launch as part of the international runway show ... At the conclusion of the event it gave me inspiration to work towards adapting zero-waste practices in which I will use in my business and personal lifestyle,” she said.
“From a young age I’d go to op-shops and get hand-me-downs. It was never really a big thing in my household. I think a creative mind can see reusability in someone else’s waste.”

According to one report, Australians discard more than more than 500,000 tonnes of textiles and leather every year.
Ms Myers says her love of eco-friendly clothing was first sparked in a high school art class.
“I basically started from there. My major work revolved around using waste material to create an outfit. From there, it pretty much formed the base for my show.”
She says she hopes the workshop can teach young people to be more conscious of what they throw out and the material they use.
"I'm hoping if it's something people learn from a younger age, it will become a habit of natural instinct to recycle."
The workshop will take place between 9:30am – 12:30pm on March 31 at CWA Park. For more information, follow her on Facebook.
