Under the Commonwealth Government’s Work for the Dole program, job seekers are placed in activities where they can gain skills and experience that give back to the community, and help the participants find a job.
Barbara Penninga, Griffith Community Centre Coordinator, had the perfect activity for them.
A day care centre formerly used by GCC had been lying dormant for years.
“We needed to make it a nicer place for parents and children to be able to use”.
Work for the Dole participants spruced the space up over a period of six months.
“The removed the carpets, painted the walls, and installed new blinds”.
The project was completed on Wednesday.
Ms Penninga was really happy with the participants.
“It was a pleasure to work with them… we made some really great connections”.
“Best of all, it didn’t cost us a thing”.
Job seekers are required to participate in Work for the Dole or another approved activity for six months each year to keep receiving their income support if they have mutual obligation requirements.
The refurbished room can now be hired by the community.
