Round five of Tom Cycle City Cup

The middle bunch was the biggest bunch and started 10 minutes later, comprising of Peter Stockwell, Jenni Massey, Bron Jones, Matthew Nugan, Paul Muir, Sarah Trotter, Ros Nugan and Mark Palmer.  The five man scratch group had their work cut out and included Malcolm Blake, Craig Tilston, Dennis Irvine, Peter Budd, and Kingsley Massey.

Limit were working very well together and taking full advantage of the favourable conditions. Danny Toaldo was keeping the pace up with a few solid turns, whilst Peggy Carpenter was marshalling the group most effectively.  The middle group were enjoying their numeric advantage and Peter Stockwell, Jenni Massey and Matthew Nugan driving the pace. Sarah Trotter also chipped in with a couple of seriously fast turns.  Despite the hard work the middle group were still 5 minutes behind limit coming into the last lap. Scratch were lapping just over 15 minutes a lap and were closing in on the front bunches rapidly and were 1 minute 30 second behind the middle group coming onto the last lap.

Coming down Murrumbigee Avenue, 3km from the end, scratch could see the middle group and strong acceleration had two scratch riders, Craig Tilston and Peter Budd, in touch with the middle group coming into the home straight. The limit group had ridden superbly to record the fastest limit time this year and completed the 4 laps in 1 hour 16 minutes and 32 seconds. Five limit riders had managed to hold off the chasing bunches and contest the sprint finish. Jack Trimboli was too quick for his bunch mates and took a fine win from the charging Danny Toaldo. Tara Payne was rewarded with an excellent third place, whilst Peggy Carpenter and George Rigon took fourth and fifth places respectively. Craig Tilston pipped Peter Stockwell on the line to take the last points of the day, and recored the fastest time, 1 hour and 7 seconds.
