The former frontman of a renowned Griffith metal band has landed a dream job teaching music at a prestigious Sydney high school.
Scott Wright, one-time lead guitarist and vocalist of Sinnister Valley, which jumped to national prominence after being unearthed by Triple J in 2012, recently graduated from university and was appointed as music teacher at Rose Bay Secondary College in Bondi.
Scott completed a double degree at Bachelor of Contemporary Music and a Bachelor of Secondary Education at Southern Cross University Lismore in December last year. The day before he graduated he was offered the position at Rose Bay.
Scott attended Tharbogang Public, Griffith Public and Griffith High. His dad James said he’s made everyone in the family really proud.
The Area News caught up with Scott, asked him a few questions and have summerised his answers below.
How long have you been singing and playing guitar?
From a really young age, I come from a Griffith family that loves their music. I originally formed a band with family members and friends called SLAM, and then Sinnister Valley.
What made you want to be a teacher?
I’ve always loved teaching. Before university, I did private guitar teaching for two years.
What’s the secret to getting offered a permanent full-time position immediately after graduating?
I did a really good course at Southern Cross Lismore, it was a great university. That put me in a good stead. And I’m doing something I’m really passionate about, which helps.
How have you found teaching so far?
It’s really tough. There’s so much work to do, the admin, staff meetings, you have to get up early and leave late. I never appreciated how hard teachers work. Even during the school holidays I was busy preparing. But I do love teaching, the kids are great.
Now that you are teaching have you given up on becoming a rock star?
No, I’ve been so busy I haven’t been performing at the moment, but I’m looking to get back in to it. I’m in the right city to do it. I’m hoping to form a band and do weekly gigs soon. I’m also looking to release an album soon.
