DEPARTED Brothers captain-coach Ben Black is set to reignite his rugby league career with Group 20 club Yenda.
A clearance for Black to join the Blueheelers has been submitted before the June 30 deadline and he will travel to Yenda this weekend to meet with the club.
Black was infamously sacked by Brothers last month just five rounds into his third season at the helm of the Wagga club.
It left a bitter taste in Black’s mouth and the 36-year-old halfback is determined to finish his playing career on his own terms.
“I’ve missed it over the last six weeks,” Black said.
“It’s been a nice little break but I’m keen to play again. I don’t want to end my career the way I did and without finishing it off.
“I want to finish on the field. I obviously didn’t want to play around here for the rest of the year so this is a good opportunity.”
Yenda have only won two of their opening eight games and sit in ninth position on the Group 20 ladder. But in a tight competition, the Blueheelers are three points outside the top five.
While he is yet to sign at Yenda, Black will head into the meeting with nothing but positive thoughts about the potential move.
“I’ve only heard good reports,” Black said.
“I think they’re desperate for a halfback and a bit of an older head to help lead them around.
“They haven’t been going too well but it’s a pretty close comp and hopefully I can give them a bit of experience they need.”
Yenda secretary Sam Panarello has followed Black for some time and tried to lure him to the club before he initially signed at Brothers.
Panarello is thrilled by the prospect of having Black on board and said hopes he could play for Yenda as soon as Sunday.
“We’re struggling in the halves, we’ve got some great kids coming through, but we need a steady head, that’s what we’re lacking,” Panarello said.
“Logistically, it’s a little bit hard. There’s going to be some travel but he seems to be doing it for the right reasons.
“He’s played at the highest level, it might have been a little while ago, but at the least our kids are going to learn something from him.
“There’s no pressure on him. He’s coming here to fill a spot and direct us around the paddock.”
Black also revealed he is keen to continue his playing career in 2018,
