With grandparents holding special places in the hearts and minds of the community, new grants are available to those wishing to commemorate these seniors for the annual grandparents day.
This program will enable community organisations, small businesses and local councils to host events that celebrate grandparents and older people for NSW Grandparents Day on Sunday 29 October 2017.
Member for Murray Adrian Piccoli encouraged local organisations to apply for funding available under the NSW Government’s Grandparents Day event grants program, to celebrate the valuable contribution grandparents and older people make in the community.
“Grandparents play a significant role in the home and the community, and this extra funding is the NSW Government’s way of thanking them for their hard work,” Mr Piccoli said.
“This is the perfect time to show our recognition and support for grandparents and older people in the community for the amazing role they play in our lives.
There are three funding categories available this year through the grants program, offering grants from $1000 to $10,000.
The Shed for Men is very excited to be a part of the celebrations again this year, after having a hugely successful event last year.
The Shed for Men’s organiser Eric Cooper and secretary Sue Pearce, are excited for the upcoming event, and welcome the grants available to organisations such as theirs.
“We will definitely go ahead with applying for this grant again this year” Mrs Pearce said.
“Even if we don't get the grant we will still hold an event as the last one was extremely successful.”
Doug Melville has been a member for the Shed for Men for 8 years, and at 74, says it’s now a part of his life, and he enjoyed sharing the event with his two grandchildren, Jacob and Alex, nine years and seven years old respectively.
Minister for Ageing, Tanya Davies is a strong advocate of this event, and said funding for local events on Grandparents Day will be doubled to $200,000 this year as part of the NSW Government’s continued commitment to seniors across the state.
“I encourage organisations planning NSW Grandparents Day events to focus on activities that help older people, regardless of their age or ability, stay connected and contribute to their communities.”
Applications for the NSW Grandparents Day event grants program are now open and will close at 5.00 pm on Friday July 14 2017.
