Yoogali SC and Hanwood White have resumed hostility playing out a dramatic 2-2 draw at EW Moore on Wednesday night.
It was the first meeting between the two sides since their meeting in the grand final last year which Yoogali won 2-1.
Hanwood started the stronger and found themselves in the lead after Yoogali’s Luke Pandolfo kick the ball into his own net.
The lead was short-lived for Hanwood as Ruben Pestana played a free kick towards to back post which found Mairo Tikerberi who continued his good scoring run putting away his tenth of the season to see the side go in 1-1 at the break.
The speed of Yoogali became a slight issue for the Hanwood defence as their ability to spread the ball saw Albersher Sandu able to hit a number of first time crosses into dangerous areas.
It took until the third attempt for Yoogali to take advantage as Sandu managed to find Tiberberi on the far post again and he put the shot away for his second of the game.
It looked as if Yoogali would go one to claim another 2-1 win over their rivals. However, the game took another turn in the final minute.
Jordan Beltrame was able to hit a dangerous early cross into the box which picked out Daniel Johnson who headed home clinically.
Hanwood coach Jason Bertacco felt his side probably got lucky to come away with the draw.
“With the way we played I think we will take the point tonight,” he said.
“I think our final third needs to improve.
“We are doing all the hard work and all the graft and ball work but that final third we really need to improve on.”
Bertacco was also praising of his keeper who made some key saves to keep his side in the match.
“Nathan Maddison was a real standout,” he said
“He is starting to get used to us now. He has only been with us for about a month and it was really good to see him make save like that.”
Yoogali SC coach Luke Santolin praised his side's composure while taking on their fierce rival.
“I think they played with a grand final like tempo and we tried to stay relaxed,” he said.
“There were some challenges flying in but you would expect nothing less when it is Hanwood vs Yoogali.”
