Griffith Tennis Club is hosting the 2017 MIA Open Championships this June long weekend.
The tournament is Griffith’s longest running sporting event and this year is the 97th since commencing in 1920.
The Griffith community has stepped up to show their support for the event and Griffith Tennis Club, with thirty-three sponsors contributing towards the running of the tournament and the $6,000 on offer in prizes, which is significant in attracting competitors from all over the Riverina and eastern sea-board.
Steve Bourke, tournament organiser remarked “We not only have our generous local businesses to thank for patronage of the tournament, but a number of families and individuals have shown how important the longevity of Griffith Tennis Club and the MIA Open are to the community.”
The three-day event is a fantastic opportunity to encourage visitors to enjoy the sites of Griffith while taking up the on-court challenge against some of our most talented tennis players.
“There are some skilled players within the club, across all age brackets and in particular several junior players who are improving their games with each tournament,” commented Danny Dossetor, Head Coach of Griffith Tennis Club.
“Many Griffith players are looking to gain some good match-experience from the championships, improve their shots and will definitely be contesting for finals finishes across the event divisions.”
There are 46 events to be played out over the three days, from Open Men’s and Women’s Singles and Doubles, through B, C and D grades, veterans and juniors as well as family events, including father & son, mother & daughter and mixed family doubles.
The tireless canteen volunteers will be serving up hot and cold drinks and food throughout the event, including breakfast if you’re after a bacon and egg roll.
Providing the weather behaves, the tournament will be a fantastic weekend to watch some high quality tennis and cheer on our Griffith competitors or play some family-oriented matches for a shot at an MIA Open trophy.
Draws can be found at the Griffith Tennis Club on Friday 9 June from 5pm and play commences 9am Saturday, 8.30am Sunday & Monday.
