After 62 minutes, just five tries had been scored in the match before the Roosters scored three tries – through coach Ryan McGoldrick, Luke Hogan and Tony Leadbitter – in six minutes to secure the win.
McGoldrick was pleased to see the run contionue but said there was plenty to improve on.
“A win’s a win but it wasn't real pretty,” he said.
“It was evenly matched contest and full credit to Waratahs, I thought they were pretty good.
“In patches both sides were real scrappy, there was drop ball and missed tries.
“The scoreline blowing out to that far probably didn’t show enough respect to their effort and I thought the game was heaps closer than that.”
While the final result ended the way DPC wanted, it took them plenty of time to wrestle back the lead.
The Roosters opened the scoring but the Waratahs hit back with two tries and a Luke Farmer field goal to take a seven-point lead and all the momentum into the break.
Half-time seemed to be the worst thing that could have happened to the Waratahs as DPC reduced the lead back to one point in a blink of an eye when the sides returned to the field.
However, Sione Tulahe scored his second of the night shortly after to make the score 17-10 in favour of the Tahs.
A quiet period followed before DPC crossed for three consecutive tries – the highlight being Hogan’s effort from a kick return where he beat a handful of Waratah tacklers before turning the afterburners on to streak away and score.
However, with the score at 24-17, the Waratahs weren’t done yet.
The Griffith side looked to have scored in the right corner late but the try was denied as the officials deemed it a double movement before Nick Briggs sealed the win for DPC with a try.
FINAL RESULT: DPC 28 (L Hogan, S Bartter, R McGoldrick, T Leadbitter, D Hopwood, N Briggs tries; J Tansey 2 goals) d Waratahs 17 (S Tulahe 2, K Wilson tries; L Farmer 2 goals, 1 field goal)
