Winx picked up right where she left off on Monday as she blitzed the field to take out the Apollo Stakes at Randwick.
The win is the mighty mare’s 14th in a row which equals Phar Lap’s mark.
The form of Winx amazed the boys at The Area News and in this week’s At The Bar, sports journalist Ben Jaffrey and Michael ‘Speedy’ Stratton discuss the run.
Ben: What’d you think of Winx on Monday?
Speedy: She just ambled past them and said see ya later, alligator. She’s something special.
Ben: Just before the bend I was worried for about half a second but Winx was never in doubt.
Speedy: Hartnell tried to make a race of it – he came home pretty well.
Ben: Hartnell closed the gap at the end but Bowman didn’t push Winx.
Speedy: She had plenty of petrol in the tank. The thing is, she’s a five-year-old and she’s still got improvement in her.
Ben: She looks like she’s getting better and better. She’s a class above.
Speedy: It equals Phar Lap but she’s still got a way to go to get to Black Caviar.
Ben: Black Caviar managed 25 straight and was another freak. Do you think we’re entering a golden age of racing?
Speedy: I think so. It all points to it.
Ben: I haven’t seen a horse better than Winx.
Speedy: I love seeing horses like Winx come sizzling down the outside to storm home and win.
Ben: You know when she’s coming but there’s nothing you can do. She just cruises past them, it looks effortless.
Speedy: I tell you what, she’d give the Hillston Cup a touch up if she got a start.
Ben: Well, the Carrathool Cup is coming up, too. It’d be on a dirt track, though. She might find it tough.
Speedy: She could go backwards and still win around these parts.
Ben: What’s next for her?
Speedy: There’s the Chipping Norton Stakes and the Queen Elizabeth Stakes coming up. I’d say she’d be entered into both of those and then given a spell before the Spring Carnival.
Ben: She’ll be going for another Cox Plate there. I don’t know what is but I’d say she’d be the shortest price favourite in the history of the Cox Plate when it rolls around.
Speedy: She’s in the Chipping Norton, as I just said, but don’t be surprised if she’s playing $1 for the win and 50 cents for the place.
Ben: It’s as close to guaranteed money as you can get when you back her.
Speedy: With that advice, I might have to back her next time.
Ben: If she’s racing Hartnell, make it a Winx-Hartnell exacta.
Speedy: If it misses, it’s all on you.
Ben: That’s not on me, bet at your own peril.
