Daniel Hardwick was driving along Remembrance Drive, heading towards Griffith, when he smelt smoke coming from his car on Monday afternoon.

Within seconds Mr Hardwick noticed flames coming from beneath his feet and quickly pulled the car over.

“I got out of the car and just started running withing seconds I heard this bang, bang, bang,” Mr Hardwick recounted.

“It sounded like firecrackers and within seconds the fire just took off and I couldn't do anything.

“I just went numb.”

While Mr Hardwick is still shaken up his quick-thinking actions likely saved his life.

“I am happy to be walking away from this,” he said.

“It’s a miracle I am still alive but miracles happen for a reason.

Mr Hardwick was returning from a friend's house when the incident occurred, he was without a phone and unable to contact the fire station when the fire was rapidly spreading.

“A good samaritan driving past in his ute stopped and asked if I was okay, he called the fire brigade for me,” Mr Hardwick said.

“I couldn’t do anything I just had to watch it burn.

“It’s a miracle I am still alive, I am too young to die.”

Firefighters from Griffith’s Fire and Rescue NSW responded to the scene and extinguished the blaze, which spread across half a hectare.

Captain Kevin Roth commended Mr Hardwick for his actions and reminded residents to abandon burning vehicles.

“Don’t try and extinguish the blaze yourself,” Captain Roth said.

“The best thing to do is get yourself a safe distance away from the burning vehicle because saving it is not worth your life.”

Eight firemen in three firetrucks responded to the scene and extinguished the blaze within 45 minutes.

“With the amount of dry grass and fuel in the area the grass fire could have been a lot worse,” Captain Roth said.

“Fortunately it was able to be controlled and extinguished responsibly quickly.”
