The Lions Club of Griffith had taken a ‘sneak peak’ at the capsule ahead of centenary celebrations in August. They were totally disheartened to find water had done irreparable damage to the contents.
Lions Club representative Bob Moore advised the Centenary of Griffith organising committee of the discovery at its most recent meeting.
“We were devastated to discover much of the contents had been damaged beyond repair when we opened the capsule,” Mr Moore said.
“Words cannot express how sorry we are that this has happened, and we are working to ensure the new capsule will stand the test of time.”
The club is working with Griffith City Council to design a new time capsule which will be opened in 25 years’ time.
“We are looking at different options, with a lot of research being undertaken,” Mr Moore said.
