The awards began in 1960 with the Australian of the Year award, the Young Australian of the Year award began in 1979, the Senior Australian of the Year award was introduced in 1999 and the Local Hero award was introduced in 2003.
The awards are only made possible through the support of sponsors. Principal partner the Commonwealth Bank has supported the awards for 36 years.
