Having owned Searl's Newsagent for 13 years, Maria and Peter Searl were finalists in the Retail Agent of the Year category of the prestigious awards, which was won by a newsagency in Dapto last week.
"We didn't win, but we'll try again next year," Mrs Searl, 48, said.
"Customers make our business and we do the best we can to make our customers happy."
The humble newsagent said despite tough times in the past, the business was looking towards a bright future.
"We have a fantastic team here and we're happy to continue to sell a range of giftware, lotteries, ABC products and specialised chocolate hampers," she said.
"We rotate stock to make sure customers always find new products in store."
Mrs Searl said the family business, which currently employs 15 staff, was not only a newsagency, but also a one-stop stationery shop.
"We look after the local business community and our focus is on stationary and OfficeSmart products."
Mrs Seal said the newsagents were currently planning new projects for their Banna Avenue business.
"There are good times ahead for us and for our valued customers," she said.
"Spring is on its way, the crops look good and the future looks good as the industry is starting to grow."
On Tuesday, August 26, Searl's News on Probert Avenue celebrated its first anniversary.
