Norwegian tourist dies in Hawkesbury River

A Norwegian tourist has become the second person to die in the Hawkesbury River at Windsor this year.

The 19-year-old failed to surface after jumping into the river from a rope at Windsor just after 2.30pm on Saturday.

His death follows that of Scott Mackenzie, 25, who drowned west of Windsor Bridge in January.

Hawkesbury mayor Kim Ford said people needed to ‘‘exercise great caution’’ around the tidal river, which is a popular swimming spot.

‘‘It’s a tragedy for young people to lose their lives like that,’’ he said.

‘‘It’s not like swimming in a backyard or council pool. The river is tidal and its currents and depths sometimes change overnight,’’ he said.

Police were called about 2.30pm on Saturday by the Norewgian’s friends when they could not find him.

His body was found by police divers following a large search of the river by water police and PolAir.
