Johnston missed the weekend cut, finishing at five-over after two rounds, with one horrendous hole on the opening day proving particularly costly.
The 28-year-old was sitting pretty at two-under after 10 holes of his first round before posting a nine on the par-four second.
He never recovered.
Johnston has become a crowd favourite on tour, with his big fuzzy beard and willingness to interact with the crowd helping him attract a legion of fans.
He earnt his nickname 'Beef' when he was just 12 years old after a friend said he looked like he had a steak on his head from a distance.
The world No.161 wants to return to the innovative Perth golf event next year.
"I'm a bit disappointed the way I played," Johnston said.
"But in realisation, the last four weeks have been real busy. I came here last minute, it was kind of tough
"I just said to my caddie on about the 16th hole today, I was frustrated.
"But you can't be too hard on yourself because you go from Malaysia - I didn't hit many balls there because of the heat - and then you come here last minute.
"We've had a great week seeing the different parts and doing cool stuff, so I've had a great week and I'll definitely be back."
Johnston said he would consider missing a lead-up event in order to be better prepared for next year's tournament in Perth.
