The 43-year-old has been nominated as Griffith senior sportsperson of the year, one of the categories of the 2018 Australia Day awards. The Jiu Jitsu blue belt has won a host of medals in the sport she took up just four years ago, but sees her main achievement as starting a class which quadrupled the number of Griffith women taking up the martial arts sport.
The Area News caught up with Elizabeth this week to talk about her vision and achievements, and have summerised her responses below.
How do you feel about your nomination for senior sportsperson of the year?
I had no idea. I don’t even know who nominated me. But I’m really happy about it because it’s the first time Jiu Jitsu has been recognised in these awards.
Is Jiu Jitsu popular among women?
It hasn’t been. I think a lot of women find the intimate nature and close contact of the sport quite intimidating, especially if they have to train with men. There were only three female players in Griffith.
I then started a class for women only and we have about 10-12 attending regularly.
Why might a sport like Jiu Jitsu appeal to women?
I think every women and girl should try Jiu Jitsu.
It teaches you self-defence, which in this day and age is something we all need.
People might know how to defend themselves standing up, but don’t know what to do when they hit the ground. Jiu Jitsu teaches you that.
It’s also good for confidence-building.
Does it help you get fit?
There is no fitness like Jiu Jitsu. You will discover muscles you never knew you had.
Is fitness important yo you?
Yes, I also work as a personal trainer. And I walk 6km every day.
Is Jiu Jitsu for all ages?
For sure. I started when I was 39 and I am now 43. I compete against girls in their early 20s and they tell me they can’t believe how fit I am.
What are your Jiu Jitsu goals?
I’m currently a blue belt, and I am going for a purple this year. My aim to become a black belt.
Where should please go if they’re interested in giving Jiu Jitsu a try?
Contact us through the RMA and Total Fitness Facebook page, and find out about classes. We offer the first class for free if you just want to try it out.
The winner of each category of the Australia Day awards will be announced at the official ceremony which commences at 9.30am on Thursday January 26 at the Griffith Regional Theatre.
