One of those valuable residents is Veronica Cudmore, whose passion for sport as a whole has helped put Griffith on the map.
“For me personally, being involved helps raise the profile of sports and athletics in the town, especially around the Commonwealth Games time, and to represent my children as well as everyone who is also involved is sport is a great honour,” Mrs Cudmore said.
She has been President of Griffith Little Athletics for nine years, is on the Griffith Show Society Committee and for 18 years she has been involved with Tharbogang School Parents and Citizens holding presidential and secretarial roles.
As a baton bearer for this year’s Queen’s Baton Relay, she takes the opportunity as another chance to recognise those involved with sport.
“I attend the sports council meetings to represent athletics, and we all work together to promote sport in Griffith, which is something that helps the profile in the community and surrounds – There is always something we are doing to promote sport in the region.”
“One big thing we have been working on is attracting the regional athletics event to Griffith, which we have been successful in organising for not this February but the following one,” Mrs Cudmore said.
She said the event, which will bring over 2000 people to Griffith over the course of the weekend, will bring huge economic fall back, as well as for what it brings to the town as a whole.
Her role as accredited level two coach of athletics, Mrs Cudmore gets a real kick out of being a part of the Sporting Schools Program is to get kids moving.
“I just love it because I have a way of getting kids of all abilities involved, and even kids who don’t like to move, they always have a big smile on their face,” she said.
“Those who are physically challenged can be the first ones who come up and ask to help set up, asking what we will be doing that day, they get so excited.”
Mrs Cudmore is proud and honoured to be a part of the relay with so many others who make vital contributions in and to the town, and encourages everyone to come and support them on January 28.
“Representing this great town is an amazing opportunity, as Griffith is big enough to give people opportunities, but small enough that community spirit isn’t lost.”
“To be honoured as part of that spirit with them all, it’s tremendous.”
Join them along Banna Avenue and Kookora St from 4pm and celebrate with them at the Community Gardens from 4.30pm.
