Budd has recently joined the Sydney based Bicisport Cycle Club where he will be racing in the affiliated Happy Wheels Racing Team.
The race team is part of club Bicisport and will see 10 supported riders racing at open and championship level in the Happy Wheels racing kit.
Budd met most of his new Happy Wheels team mates and importantly received his new racing kit for 2018.
“It’s great to finally be racing in some great looking kit and how about the fluro yellow shoes,” he said.
“You can’t miss those and they feel like slippers”.
The Happy Wheels Racing Team is set up to support riders in open and championships events. Budd’s big target in 2018 will be the UCI Gran Fondo World Championships to be held in Varese, Italy in August.
With a 10th place in Perth in 2016 followed by 61st out of 260 riders in Abli, France this year Budd will be looking to use his experience to have another crack at the world best masters riders.
His other big events will include the State and National Masters Championships that will be upon his return from Italy.
The 228km Grafton to Inverell race will be new in his race calendar and that will see a big training build up to the 12 May race date.
With the Happy Wheels Racing Team support car providing feed station assistance Budd is hoping to put in a solid performance in the 7- plus hour race.
The first open race of the year will be the Tolland Open in March and along with the Riverina Interclub events will be used to build race fitness for the “Grafton”.
Team Director, Mike O’Reilly is looking forward to the Happy Wheels Racing Team showing their colours this year and hopefully getting amongst some good results. O’Reilly said that
“It’s exciting that Budd has joined the team,” O’Reilly said.
“I have been watching him for a while because he has shown over a number of years that he is a masters rider of class, consistently producing some great results at championships and open level racing.”
In other Bicisport news fellow Griffith rider Frank Signor has also made the jump to the Bicisport club for 2018.
Signor is coming off a couple of lean cycling years and is motivated to step up his racing with his new club.
Signor will be looking to join fellow Bicisport rider Melissa Budd in competing in the Riverina Interclub series as well as a few Riverina Open events.
