Andrea De Waal from Wade High School was the stand-out from Griffith, coming first in the entire state for German Beginners.
“It’s the best feeling ever to be finally finished!” Andrea said.
“I feel pretty good about everything. I didn’t think it would happen, I thought I’d do well and I’d be proud of myself nevertheless, but never thought I would come first in the state.”
She was invited to a ceremony in Sydney to be awarded a certificate for her outstanding achievement, however couldn’t make it as she was on holiday.
“I want to go straight to uni now. I am thinking of going to Massey University in New Zealand, to study something like media and communications leaning towards public relations,” Andrea said.
“I would really like to thank my German teacher Mr Roach, he was definitely the best teacher I could ever have.”
She says her motivation to do well was the driving force behind her success, but the support from her parents also contributed.
“They always said they would accept anything I did, and said I would do well regardless, it was very nice to have that support.”
“It also really helps to have good friends in your class who will push you to do better and support you.”
Elizabeth Portolesi from Marian Catholic College (MCC) proved her mettle by claiming five Band Six rankings for her studies in Advanced English, Legal Studies, Modern History, History Extension and Music.
“When I sat the exams, I thought it was a bit hit and miss, but at the end of it I came away really happy, knowing I had done my best and proud of what I had done,” Elizabeth said.
“I didn’t really stress too much about my results, because I knew even if I didn’t get the right score there were other ways to get into the course I wanted to do.”
She credits her achievements to the passion of her teachers, and the support from her family.
“My family never pushed me to do anything, but they put their faith and trust in me, knowing I would work hard and do everything I needed.”
Elizabeth now aims to get into ANU or Monash University to study law and international relations.
