Police have identified the man as 53-year-old Griffith local Wayne Smith. 

Just after 6.30am on Saturday, a member of the public contacted the police after finding a Toyota Hilux utility had veered off the road and hit trees whilst travelling on Yapunyah Street in Barellan about 50kms east of Griffith.

Police allege he was killed on impact.

The circumstances are still under investigation, but police believe fatigue and speed could be contributing factors. 

Another three accidents occurred on Griffith roads over the weekend, with a truck roll-over and car crash on Saturday, and a two-car accident on Sunday.

Truck Roll-over

Earlier on Saturday, emergency services were called to a truck rollover roughly 17kms west of Rankin Springs on the Mid-Western Highway.

Police allege the truck suffered a tire blow-out, causing the vehicle to cross over the lane into scrub, hitting a tree and rolling over. 

The driver was uninjured.

Vehicle Collision

A man has been taken to hospital after a collision on Saturday night.

At about 11pm, a white Holden Rodeo and a green Holden Commodore collided on Wakaden Street near Crossing Street.

Police allege the white Holden collided with the rear of the stationary vehicle.

The driver was conveyed to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The driver and passenger of the Commodore were uninjured.

Police believe alcohol could have been a contributing factor but inquiries continue.

Two-car collision

In the final blow for the weekend, two cars collided the intersection of Kookora Street and Walla Avenue on Sunday at about 9am in the morning,

One person was conveyed to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Police inquiries continue.

Griffith Local Area Command Inspector Wayne McLachlan said police are asking people to take extra care on the roads over Christmas. 

“In the lead up to Christmas we are urging all motorists to drive to the road conditions and take regular rest breaks,” he said.
