12-year-old Kimal Papalii has aspirations to become the new Timmy Trumpet, feeling the beat when he playing and getting into the rhythm of the music.
Kimbal is the School Captain of Lake Wyangan Public School, and has taken his leadership skills into teaching some other students how to play.
“I have about six student that I teach trumpet to,” he said.
“What I love most about teaching is showing them how to play a song and they play it really well.”
“When they get asked who their teacher is and they say me and they start saying good stuff about me, it’s really nice.”
As part of the Griffith Town Band, Kimbal loves performing as a group and hearing everyone’s parts come together.
“I mostly like when we all play together and it sounds really really good, especially when we play songs from The Pirates of the Caribbean and other movie songs,” he said.
He says he was inspired to play by listening to other year six students play last year, and was mentored by one of his friends who helped him learn.
While his brother and sister are also musical, with his brother playing the trumpet and saxophone and his sister playing the piano, he says he is the one with the most musical passion now.
“I just feel good when I play, it really makes me happy and I just want to get moving,” he said.
Kimbal has just come back from School Spectacular with his school, and was part of the choir for the nation-wide school production.
“It was really fun but it was a challenge – I woke up the morning after the last performance and my voice was really sore from singing so much!”
While he hasn’t had the opportunity to perform with his trumpet yet, it is something that he is looking forward to immensely.
