Yambil Street has long been the dingy ugly cousin of beautiful broad Banna Avenue.

This is set to change, with plans in place to transform it into a tree-lined street with a boulevard feel.
Following the adoption of the Griffith CBD Strategy in October 2015, Griffith City Council has commenced planning work on the first phase of implementing the strategy, namely the Yambil Street precinct.
Griffith Mayor, Councillor John Dal Broi said Yambil Street, particularly the lower block between Jondaryan Avenue and Kooyoo Street, was identified as a priority area due to aging infrastructure and a general lack of amenity.
“We want to liven and green it up,” Cr Dal Broi said.
“Works are expected to commence during 2018 which include replacing infrastructure, pavement repairs and rejuvenation, establishment of street trees, installation of street furniture, and the construction of a new footpath.”
“These works are an important first step in the wider strategy such as the Kooyoo Street Redevelopment, Neville Place Civic Precinct, Olympic Street Youth Precinct, Main Canal Rejuvenation and Banna Avenue streetscape improvements,” he added.
Council’s Project Planner, Nathan Farnell said, “we’d like to create a consistent tree line, to give it that boulevard feel”.

Cr Dal Broi said the businesses along Yambil Street are all being regularly consulted on the project, and that as much of the work will be done on weekends and nights to avoid inconvenience.
“The Yambil Street Forum was held to advise those in the lower block between Jondaryan Avenue and Kooyoo Street of the extend of the works being undertaken, and to allow the time for businesses and land owners to ask questions and provide feedback on the plan,” Mr Farnell said.
Cr Dal Broi also said work has been done to clean out all the silt from the bottom of the drain.
“The forum was largely successful and Council intends to host further forums in the New Year to keep the community up to date on the progress of the Yambil Street works.”
Once Stage One has been completed, Council plan to commence developing the middle and top blocks with engagement sessions to be undertaken with business owners and landholders during 2018.
