About 3.40am this morning, a Holden Commodore was travelling east bound along the Stuart Highway near Darlington Point.
The car veered from the roadway and collided with a tree impacting on the passenger side.
All emergency services were activated in response to the crash.
The 56-year-old woman travelling in the front passenger seat died at the scene.
The driver, a 50-year-old man, was taken to Griffith Base Hospital where he will undergo mandatory blood and urine testing.
He has been treated for a chest injury and remains in a stable condition.
A report will be prepared for the information of the Coroner.
Griffith LAC Chief Inspector John Wadsworth has said one lane has been closed, and will remain so while the vehicle undergoes forensic examination.
He says at this stage, police believe the driver and passenger do not hail from the Griffith area.
Chief Inspector Wadsworth says while the cause of the fatal crash remains unknown, he wishes to remind people to take breaks every two hours while driving.
“Although it is a tragic time, however I feel its still relevant and we need to remind people, that if they are driving to drive over night and in the mornings to have a break,” he said.
“While we don’t know if fatigue was an issue in this incident, people need to be reminded.”
Griffith LAC will continue to conduct investigations.
