Mr Barilaro made the announcement during his third visit to Griffith in the past few weeks, outside Hanwood Post Office with Nationals candidate for Murray Austin Evans and Griffith mayor John Dal Broi.
Mr Barilaro said the investment will go towards building a new bike path from the Bunnings store in Griffith to Murphy Road in Hanwood.
Mr Evans said he was pleased the funding was secured, but he was unlikely to be riding on the path himself.
“Austin, John and Lycra don’t go together. I think for the safety of the community we’re all going to keep out of Lycra,” he said.
Mr Barilaro said, “the cycleway will be a major new community corridor, enabling residents to travel safely on a dedicated bike path.
“Cycling is a great way to get active, and this investment will encourage people to leave the car at home and instead get on their bike to get to work and around town.
“This is something the community has been pushing for for a while, and the NSW Government is proud to help deliver it,” he said.
Griffith Mayor John Dal Broi welcomed the announcement.
“The Griffith Council will also be contributing to this project, and we are delighted to have such a significant funding boost from the State Government,” Mr Dal Broi said.
“This a great example of the state government, local council and local businesses working together to provide facilities that our community wants and needs.”
Mr Evans said he was pleased to see the funding had been secured. “This has been a project that’s been on the agenda for a long time, and it’s great to see it happening,” Mr Evans said.
After the announcement, Mr Barilaro took time out of his schedule to go to Griffith Real Estate, to meet Pink Up Griffith organiser Tony Santolin.
Pink Up Griffith is the initiative of colouring the town pink in the hope of raising $100,000 for breast cancer nurses funded through the McGrath foundation.
“It’s great to have the Deputy Premier lend his support to this important campaign,” Mr Santolin said.
