And it happened just a month after our coldest August morning in 55 years.
The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) reported the maximum temperature in Griffith as 38.2 degrees on Saturday September 23.
This was well above the previous record of 35 degrees, recorded in 2003.
It was also double the average maximum temperature for Griffith in September.
Narrendera’s maximum was also 38.2 degrees, the previous record being 33 degrees.
The precise temperature in Leeton was not known, but it was thought to be about the same.
Six-year-old Max Ferris felt the heat in Griffith on Saturday.
“It was so hot I went over to a friend’s place and asked if we could jump in the pool”.
On Sunday August 20, Griffith recorded its coldest morning in 55 years, with the temperature plummeting to minus 4.4 degrees.
Temperatures in the mid 20s are forecast for Griffith this week.
