The mercury was touching 37 degrees and, with almost gale force wind, it was a tough day for golfers contesting a single stableford at Griffith Golf Club last Saturday.

Martin Sweeney (38 points), doing what his beloved Collingwood could not do - win - took out A Grade, draining birdies on the 1st, and 11th, in firing 74 off the stick.
Andrew Noad (37 points) came second, carding a birdie on the 12th, on a countback over Rob Trembath and Slim Cavanaugh.
Garry Hartnett (37 points) won B Grade, carding seven pars on a countback over John Bortolazzo also 37 points.
He only managed five pars, only managing three points on the par fives, though they were downwind.
The prevailing conditions held no terrors for Paul Josling who carded 42 points to win C Grade, a four point par on the 13th.
Runner-up Steve Marland (39 points) looked a winner after carding 24 points out, but crashed to only score 15 home
Pro Pins won by: 15th Max Turner, 8th Tuiru Phillip who also won the 16th pin, Byron James 4th, Mark Brown 7th.
Vouchers went to 34 points.
Due to the Colour Me Fun Run Day, there was no Sunday golf.
Several hundred people turned out for the day of exercise and fun, raising a considerable amount for the various charities.
The golf course provided great ambience for the event.
James Lethleans School Holidays Golf Clinics start on Thursday, September 28, then will be held on Monday and Thursday, October 3 and 5.
The clinics are for children between the 5-16 years.
Cost is $10 a lesson or $20 for all three. They start at 9.30am each day, equipment provided.
The Caltex Summer 5s are set to start on Monday, October 9. Teams of five will play each other in a competition format. Registration forms at the pro shop of clubhouse or online.
The club is also offering six months membership of $120 for fives players.
All club members’ condolences for the family of former active member Roy Maggs.
Daylight saving starts on Sunday, October 1.
All events on Wednesday, Saturday, Sunday and Labour Day Monday are single stablefords.
The veterans played a two-grade single stableford last Thursday.
Brian Savage (35 points) won 0-18 Grade on a countback over Joe Cudmore (35 points).
Geoff Smith (38 points) won 19-36 Grade ahead of Cec Spence (37 points).
John Bortolazzo won the 7th pin, Tony McBride 8th, Garry Purcell 11th. Vouchers to 33 points on a countback.
A single stableford is on Thursday, and members are urged to return their entry forms for the tournament, which is only three weeks away.
In a two grade single stableford last Wednesday, Graham Sibraa 36 points won 0-18 Grade ahead of Frank Zambon 36 points. Cec Spence (41 points) won 19-36 Grade.
