Best thing about living in Melbourne?
The interconnection between all art forms, from jazz to theatre to comedy, makes Melbourne the best place in the world to create. Also, the people are authentic and open, cultured and engaged, with an equal love of arts and sports. We don't tolerate racists, we fight for progressive values, and we take care of each other.
Worst thing?
We have no professional theatre company dedicated to creating Australian music theatre. Every other theatrical art-form has a company that champions Australian works, so why not music theatre?
Melbourne's best kept secret?
7/11 have $1 coffees that are really good. Also, you don't have to talk to a barista.
Melbourne's most underrated suburb?
I generally believe suburbs can take care of themselves, despite how under or overrated we judge them to be. Suburbs just know, you know?
Best takeaway?
Friday night fish n' chips from Scales Fish N' Chippery on Weston Street, Brunswick East.
Guilty pleasure?
Sometimes I go to Barkly Square Shopping Centre and buy homewares I don't particularly need from Kmart. I also meet a lot of nice dogs there.
How would you make Melbourne better?
I'd buy the Palace Theatre on Bourke Street back off Jinshan Developments and restore it to it's rightful position as a major music venue in the heart of Melbourne's commercial theatre district.
Who would you like to bump into on the street and why?
My wife. She's the best.
Most recent discovery: Be nice to the lady at the cheese shop. Photo: Ken Irwin
Your idea of a great night out?
Going to see Paul Williamson's Hammond Combo play at the Rainbow Hotel, Fitzroy.
Favourite building in Melbourne?
The Comedy Theatre. Easily my favourite place to perform and see live performance. It's old, creaky, dusty, intimate and real.
Best exercise in town?
Skateboarding from my house in Brunswick East to my studio in Collingwood along the bike path, through Edinburgh Gardens.
Most recent discovery?
If you're nice to the lady who works at the cheese shop in the deli section of the Queen Victoria Markets, she'll give your kids a bit of cheese to eat while you make your important cheese decision.
Describe Melbourne in three words.
Don't touch off.
Vivid White plays at Southbank Theatre, The Sumner from 18 November to 23 December.
