The award was for their locally grown and made 2016 Hanwood Estate 1913 Touriga.
McWilliam’s viticulture manager Andrew Higgins said “our 2015 and 2016 wines have done really well. I’m really proud of the Touriga as it’s straight off the vineyard on our property”.
Winemaker Harry Kinsman was also thrilled.
“This award shows the evolution of the region as one of the leaders in innovative winemaking. Our team really represents the modern face of the industry”.
The Royal Queensland Wine Show is considered one of the top 5 shows on the Australian wine circuit.
McWilliams say Touriga has definitely started to trend in the world of wine with the some great Australian competitions (Adelaide Reviews top 100 wines, trophy winners at Sydney Wine show) recognising the varietal within their awards.
Kylie Wheeler and Stephanie Lucas were also part of the team behind the 1913 Touriga.
Ms Wheeler said “we are just great at making everything”.
Mr Higgins describes the Touriga as a fragrent, medium-bodied wine that goes well with pasta, pizzas and most foods apart from heavy red meats.
He sees the future of winemaking as “continuing to aim for more food friendly wines, but with greater concentration of fruit flavour”.
A total of 1,608 wines were received from 217 Australian wineries this year at the Royal Queensland Wine Show, with the 26 strong panel of expert judges pleased with the quality of entries.
The Xanadu Wines Reserve Chardonnay 2015 took out the grand champion title.
The award for Best Young Red of Show went to Deep Woods Estate for their Estate Cabernet Merlot 2015.
That was the first time in recent history a cabernet merlot has taken out the trophy, with shiraz usually dominating.
