Riverina League clubs voted in favour of the move at this week’s delegates meeting.

The move back to Narrandera comes after a successful one-year venture to Wagga’s Robertson Oval.

Seven of the nine Riverina League clubs voted in favour of moving the grand final back to Narrandera Sportsground, while Wagga Tigers and Mangoplah-Cookardinia United-Eastlakes abstained from voting.

AFL Riverina football operations manager Shane Buchanan said most clubs were right behind the move.

“The general consensus from the meeting was that clubs were happy to get back to Narrandera,” Buchanan said.

“Narrandera is the centre of the Riverina Football Netball League and the facilities are great.”

An unsafe surface at Narrandera Sportsground forced last year’s grand final to be moved to Robertson Oval. It resulted in the biggest gate of the last three years, despite being held on a wet, rainy day.

Wagga Tigers raised this fact at the meeting but the clubs were happy to return to Narrandera.

Riverina League president Rob Ash has always been a big believer in what is doing best for the entire football community, and not purely for financial reasons.

This year’s grand final will already break from tradition by being held on a Saturday for the first time. It is scheduled for Saturday, September 23.

A decision on the venues for the remainder of the finals series is yet to be made but there is likely to be consideration given to hosting another final at Griffith.
